Would you return to nursing after Mat leave (specific situation)
My workplace is making redundancies due to financial loss for 5+ years. Also encouraging all staff to reduce hours in order to save money and keep the service going.
I am due to return from Mat leave at the end of the year however they’re offering zero flexibility on my return.
I have requested set days in or set days off in order to arrange childcare and I was declined stating they have a rule to not offer anyone set days.
I requested if I could only do morning shifts, avoiding evening and night shifts even temporarily (planning to breastfeed until 1, then can assist dad in being able to do evening and night shifts solo). Declined as that would still count as set days.
I do not have friends and family that are reliable to care for my child, all local childminders are now fully booked up (I arranged nursery in early pregnancy and they messed up and no longer have a place for my child, only recently letting me know 🙃).
Finding it difficult as I’d be expecting childcare to be available 5 days a week but not paid or used 5 days a week? Which sounds like a bad business deal haha
They have said they’ll waive paying back my maternity leave allowance and I do also have AL accrued from maternity leave.
We have some savings £20k (was saving for a bigger house when I got pregnant lol), my partner has a decent and secure job and the bank shifts locally are relatively fair and frequent, I am hopeful I could still achieve enough bank shifts to revalidate
I KNOW some people will be screaming about losing independence etc etc however I am planning to try and keep my registration, my partner is very supportive of whatever I want to do but also extremely pro keeping my registration (he fully supported me financially throughout my training)
My little one is only going to be small for a short period of time I’d like to spend as much of it with them as possible 🥺
TLDR: would you risk just joining the bank if it meant you didn’t have to pay back maternity leave pay, could spend time with your child and hopefully keep your registration?
