I’m a bilingual writer and I’m a bit confused about how rights work when submitting to literary magazines. I have a short story written in both English and my native language.
I’ve noticed that many magazines require "First Electronic, Anthology, and Archival Rights." My question is: do these rights usually apply specifically to the English language version, or are they global/universal?
If my story gets published by a magazine in my native language first, does that mean I can no longer offer "First Rights" to an English-speaking lit mag? I'm trying to figure out if I should avoid submitting the native language version until the English one finds a home, or if they are considered two separate things in the industry.
Has anyone here dealt with bilingual submissions of their own work?
Thanks!
