I’m about to finish my current project, and I’ve been thinking a lot about what I should do next.

For some context, I’ve been focusing on backend development and have built up experience through various school projects. I was also selected for a fairly competitive program where I worked on data processing and service-related projects.

Recently, I’ve been leaning more toward data engineering.

Despite all that, lately I’m not even sure if I still enjoy development.
I used to just keep going without questioning it, but now it feels more like a burden than something I genuinely want to do.

I can’t tell if this is just burnout, or if it’s a sign that this path might not be right for me.

I’m also considering taking a break from doing projects for a while and focusing more on studying fundamentals and theory instead.

Do you think it makes sense to pause projects and go deeper into concepts for some time, or is it better to keep building things even when motivation is low?

Has anyone else gone through something similar?
How did you figure out whether to push through or change direction?
