The R1200GS is underestimated in my opinion.
I bought this bike a year and half ago, rode it to AZ from NorCal with my wife and did a trip to Montana solo. Seems to be a good design! On Monday I joined a KTM 300XC and a 500EXC for some trail riding to see how it did. The trails were dry and the Motoz tires did great!
For some reason I see a lot of negativity towards BMW on various motorcycle forums, I don't understand the hate. The bike seems to be able to go most anywhere I want to, unless there is deep mud.
