I'm in the process of getting quotes to replace the siding on my house (New England Area), and I've received two different approaches that I'm trying to better understand.

One contractor is proposing a full tear-off, instal 3/8 rigid foam insulation board, then install vinyl over the foam.

The other contractor is proposing a full tear-off, install tyvek. then install vinyl siding over that.

My questions are:

  1. Is rigid foam board alone sufficient as a weather barrier?

  2. Is it standard/ best practice to use Tyvek + foam, or is it typically used instead of the other?

  3. With the New England climate, which system would you trust more long-term?

Thanks for any help you can provide!
