New to Pokerogue- is it supposed to be this difficult?

Hi! I’ve been playing Pokerogue for almost a year now, and despite how many runs I’ve had, I haven’t managed to beat the game once yet. I haven’t even gotten close! The furthest I’ve managed to get to has been Wave 145 before I eventually had to give up.

Usually, it is my fault. I can’t always predict when the next battle is going to show up and I don’t manage to heal all of my Pokemon in time, but otherwise, it feels like the game is deliberately making things impossible. No matter what your moveset is, you’ll end up in a battle with Pokemon far beyond your level, with a multitude of one hit KO moves, and sometimes consecutively before you even have a chance to heal (assuming you even have enough money in the first place. I have to prioritise nuggets before anything else just so I don’t get caught later in the game with not enough money to heal before the checkpoint, but this means forgoing other vital items).

I’ve spoken to others who have managed to beat the game before, so I’m wondering if I’m just going about this in the wrong way. Are there any tips I should know about? I’m relatively unfamiliar with Pokemon games as a whole (growing up, I only watched the cartoon) so there’s probably a lot of battle technique/items that I don’t know about yet. If you have any advice, or tips on what starter Pokemon to choose, let me know!

For reference, my current team is Lanturn (my favourite), Charizard, Blastoise, Tentacruel, Ponyta (with the High Jump Kick egg move that has been a life-saver against normal types) and Alakazam.

I have a few legendary Pokemon, such as Zekrom and Spectrier, but even they haven’t helped me reach the end.

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the advice!! My knowledge was all over the place, and I was making a lot of mistakes with the Pokemon I was choosing, so I appreciate y’all putting me on a better track to start optimising my runs :]
