Me and my 3 friends have been playing Minecraft together for roughly 10 years. We started playing during late teens and took a shine to Minecraft PvP, however we always loved playing MMORPG games outside of Minecraft.

So we decided to start working on our game that ties both of these together and have now, after 10 years, finally finished our passion project and we are ready to show it to the public eye.

This is called BetterPvP - A complete custom coded plugin that makes players feel like they're playing with mods, without having to download a single mod. Our software is completely open sourced & community backed with over 20 contributors and over 300,000 lines of code written.

Key features of our plugin:

  • 6 unique classes, each with their own customizable skill trees with over 100 abilities/spells to choose from
  • A complete Dungeon, World Boss system that drops specialized custom loot that you can use to upgrade your character
  • An item upgrading system that lets you re-roll your stats
  • A faction style teaming system called Clans that lets you team up with your friends & build a base that's yours
  • A sieging system that lets you use real cannons to raid other Clans
  • An end-game raid with difficult challenges to complete once you reach maxxed out gear & stats
  • A complete professions system with UI based skill trees that give you stronger perks that follows mining, woodcutting & fishing
  • A personalized progression system for both the player & the clan
  • A custom fishing system that lets you catch larger fish depending on your level & where you are fishing

As this is a platform for server development, I wanted others to take a look at our open-sourced code to see what we have created. I think it's pretty impressive but I wanted to see what others thought.

Check out our GitHub to see what we have made.

My friends and I set out about 10 years ago to make a game on the Minecraft platform, the way we wanted to play. Over this time we have changed & refined the way it plays to suit modern standards and to be more accomodating to new players.

We love the MMO genre, but also fell in love with Minecraft PvP in our early childhood so we decided to try and bring the two together.

This isn’t a mod that you can download, but it’s a plugin that runs without players needing to download a thing.

I just wanted to showcase what we have done to gauge community interest, as I know we are all starting to get a bit bored of the same old combat loop, the same old mini-games, and we want to see something unique brought back to Minecraft as a long running game where you can actually build progression in-game, all while keeping the sand box genre that Minecraft is.

I’ve attached a video to this post as a small example of our vision, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had similar ideas or have come across something like this before and if you have any extra ideas around this topic.

Hey all,

I’ve been working on a PvP server called BetterPvP for the last 10 years and we tried to move away from the usual “just fight players” loop. Instead, we built a progression system around PvP in a really unique way. This has been a big passion project for us and we’ve invested a lot of time into it without asking any hard hitting questions around the general idea of it - we just did it because we’re friends and enjoyed making it.

You can complete dungeons and world bosses with your clan

There’s an end-game raid once your gear is maxed
And can be attuned (chance to improve stats or add rune sockets)

You can reforge gear for things like attack speed, damage, or movement speed

We also have a separate game mode on its own server (like a network) with classes (Knight, Assassin, Mage, etc.) with Dominate + CTF

The idea was to make PvP feel more like an MMO instead of just duels hence the name BetterPvP.

I’m curious — does this sound like something you’d actually play, or is it too much for a PvP server?

If you’ve seen servers try this before, what worked / didn’t?
Happy to share more details if anyone’s interested.
