My husband broke his fifth metatarsal, mildly displaced, mid shaft, 3 months ago. NWB in boot for 4 weeks, then FWB in boot for 2 weeks, then transitioned to stiff shoes. At 11 weeks, was feeling pretty good...slightly sore, and walking, biking, hiking and golfing. When he went for his final x-ray at 11 weeks, expecting to be given full release to play tennis , run etc, the surgeon told him that the x-ray showed ZERO healing from day 1. he was referred to a foot specialist surgeon and sent for a CT scan. That took 3 weeks. We have been in hell wondering what to do. Mean while he has had way more pain and swelling last couple weeks. He went back to wearing the boot and has been so stressed. We just saw the foot surgeon today (14 weeks). CT scan showed zero healing. He said it is officially a "non union" and my husband can either just live with it as is forever (in pain and probably no high impact acitivities), or have surgical fixation. We decided to do the surgery. It is booked for 2 weeks from now. Doc said it has a decent chance of working but not 100% (screw fixation). Would love to hear positive outcomes from similar scenarios. He said my hsuband will be FWB immediately, and in a boot for 6 weeks....fully back to activity by 3 months.
