Show r/SideProject: RentTheRecipe — recipe kits from local cooks, delivered to vacation rentals
Just shipped the MVP of RentTheRecipe.
What it is: A marketplace where local home cooks sell recipe kits to travelers in vacation rentals. Kit = pre-portioned ingredients + recipe card + video walkthrough + WhatsApp support from the cook. Delivered to your Airbnb.
Why: Cooking classes are $70-150/person. But a lot of travelers just want to cook a local dish in their rental kitchen. There's no one serving that use case.
Stack: FastAPI + SQLite + nginx + Cloudflare. Landing page with waitlist. Live at recipe.dustinnstroud.com
Status: MVP live, 3 kits listed (Oaxaca), looking for first real customers and more cooks.
What I've learned so far:
- Airbnb Experiences owns the "go somewhere and cook" market, but nobody does "cook in your rental"
- Ingredient sourcing is the real value — travelers can't find chilhuacle peppers
- The cook side is the hard part — building trust, consistent quality, logistics
Happy to share more about the build or the business model if anyone's curious.
