I received a notice from the Post Office today that my mailbox is out of compliance with regulations and must be corrected within 30 days. The compliance problem is that the box must be between 41-45 inches above the street level, and our mailbox is ~38 inches above the street.

This has not been a problem for the past 9 years we have owned the house, we have not changed or adjusted the mailbox itself or its height in any way over the last 9 years.

What *has* changed is that the county repaved our street last year. When the street was repaved, the street grade was raised by roughly 4 inches. Because of this added height to the street, my mailbox has been brought out of compliance.

Replacing the mailbox post will cost me a significant amount of money. Is this something I could ask our county government to compensate me for, or would it cost me too much in time and effort?
