Hi guys,

I bought my first house last week and, when I was having my washing machine fitted, the installers showed me that it wasn't possible to fit it because the dishwasher (which the previous owner had left) was occupying the only available slot; this crude standing pipe; this leads directly out to the drain at the back of the property, which the other pipes/tubing go under the kitchen sink.

The first picture (with the sockets) shows the situation where I wanted to put the machine in. The tube in the standing pipe is my washing machine's, while the dishwasher's is the light grey one you can see coming out the bottom-right (I cannot currently use it as it'd disgorge onto the floor!).

To my (totally uninformed) eye it looks like the removal men or whoever removed the previous washing machine simply cut its tubing; I am guessing it was the dark grey horizontal tube-end you can see attached to that pipe.

There's also a further "mystery" tube coming in from the left. Perhaps this was the tube for yet another washing machine way back?

The second picture shows the situation under the kitchen sink; you can see what looks like where the two older tubes connected.

What I wanted to ask is, does this look like a situation a total novice could fix? I am assuming I can take a screwdriver to the spigot(?) and disconnect that tubing end from the horizontal pipe and perhaps swap it out with my washing machine's and replace the dishwasher's tube into that vertical pipe where it originally had been? Does that sound sensible?

Thank you for reading and will appreciate any advice!

Edit:
Turns out the horizontal pipe was blocked; the washing machine was unable to pump water through it and my own feeding water via a funnel didn't lead to any audible sound from the drain outside.

I am guessing the most elegant solution is to get a Y-adapter (if that's the right name) for the standing PVC pipe and leave it at that.
