USA vs. Canada best-on-best outdoor game at the Big House.
the only international outdoor game like this was the World Juniors in Buffalo. USA and Canada played outdoors at the Bills’ stadium in the snow and drew 44,000+ fans for a group-stage junior game. That wasn’t even a medal game, and it still felt like a huge event.
Now imagine that concept with NHL players.
The Big House already proved it can host hockey on a ridiculous scale. The 2014 Winter Classic between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs drew 105,491 fans, which is still the biggest crowd in hockey history. So the building, the market, and the spectacle are all there.
My idea is to make it part of a World Cup of Hockey. Put the rink at midfield, build Final Four-style temporary seating down near the ice, split the stadium into USA and Canada sections, and try to pack 110,000+ people into Michigan Stadium.
