Hello! I was approved for unemployment benefits on a Monday, on which I was given two payments. Then, the very next day, I was (rightfully) denied based on a new determination that said I wouldn't be eligible for several more months. I am happy to pay back what was given to me, but I am also being asked to pay back more than $100 in taxes that were taken out. That doesn't make much sense to me — am I obligated to pay the full amount or just the amount I was paid?
My thought process was that, based on everything I've read, I should file for unemployment even if I won't be eligible right away due to severance, which I did. I don't understand why I am being penalized for that in the form of paying back taxes.
