Guys help. I’m 21, a female, and looking to break into the automotive technical industry. I love cars and love bmw and would like to build a career from this. I know there’s a lot of downsides to this industry but I really want something that involves working with my hands. No other trades really excite me like how cars do. I’m considering going to my local community college and their program is aligned to prepare you for ASE certifications. It’s 2 years but I’m almost certain I can graduate a term early because I already have Gen Ed’s out of the way. I figured the program would be great for me to build hands on experience with vehicles. My long term goal is bmw, something like UTI/fastrack is out of question for me because 55k for tuition is absolutely insane.

My plan as of right now is to attend community college and get my AOS in automotive technology. I plan on asking my local BMW dealership if they have any entry level positions available like a porter or something to get my foot in the door and used to shop pace. I figured working there and school would give me good experience. The college prescribes a tool kit as well.

When it comes to bmw STEP I wonder, are all bmw technicians STEP certified? Is that what it takes to achieve master level? I’d like to apply for STEP eventually however I need to pass the BMW ASE1 and have an automotive degree. If anyone has any tips on the BMW ASE1 that would be appreciated too.

And then there’s the whole inspectors license aspect. I’m in New York and I’m under the impression that you need a dealer or shop to sponsor you getting the license, but some dealers already want you to have the license so that’s also confusing.

I suppose I’m writing this thread because I’m a little lost. Some say just start as a porter and work your way up, but if I want to be STEP certified I need the degree. And then some people say not all bmw techs are step certified to begin with. And then some say dealers are so short on techs that they’re willing to train.

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m just trying to figure out the quickest and most cost efficient way to achieve my goal. Please be nice. I’m well aware I need to work my way up and become fast. Those around me would describe me as a quick learner, and I’m really determined. I feel like my head is going to explode lol. Help.
