The Origin: Project "Iron Balance"
The Aegis Vanguard did not begin its life as a standard vessel on the Deimos shipyards. It was the result of a classified operation known as Project "Iron Balance." The United Colonies sought to develop a craft capable of fulfilling two roles simultaneously: a heavy tank (the Aegis) and a high-speed interceptor (the Vanguard).
During construction at a remote drydock, the facility came under heavy fire from the Crimson Fleet. The ship was incomplete; the port side was heavily up-armored for defense, while the starboard side consisted only of the experimental high-output engines and the primary cockpit module. In a daring escape, then-test pilot Althea Kael hot-launched the unfinished prototype into the fray.
