Beginner equipment for capturing splats
Hi guys,
I’m completely new to Gaussian Splatting and currently starting out in Poland. My goal is to begin by scanning apartment interiors/flats and exporting them as Gaussian splats for my portfolio website, and maybe later move into houses or even real estate projects 😄
Right now I’ve only been using my iPhone 15 Pro Max with LiDAR together with Luma AI to capture walkthrough videos. It’s been surprisingly fun and actually decent for learning, but now I want to take things a step further and buy my first dedicated capture equipment.
From what I’ve researched so far, people seem to recommend 2 main approaches:
- 360 cameras (Insta360 / DJI Osmo 360 etc.)
- DSLR / mirrorless cameras
What I’m struggling with is understanding what actually gives the best balance between:
- reconstruction quality
- speed of capture
- indoor low-light performance
- workflow simplicity
I’m mostly interested in interior scanning right now, so consistency and smooth capture matter more to me than cinematic footage.
One thing I’ve been wondering:
Would something like the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 with wide-angle lenses actually make sense for Gaussian Splatting?
I know it’s not a DSLR or a true 360 camera, but it’s tiny and easy to move through interiors
Maybe you guys have some opinions?
