Caspian Orthell was born the youngest son of a noble merchant family. Being of little importance to his father, Caspian faced neglect from his family all his life. When he was diagnosed with a deadly, chronic disease which rendered him sickly and frail, he decided to take his fate into his own hands and find a cure—which came at a great cost. Experimental and highly volatile voidglass gems were implanted into his body over the course of a few months, halting the progression of the illness and granting him unique magical abilities. However, the ritual’s torment and the gems' corrupting resonance left his mind splintered. Now, he is trying to free himself from the curse he bestowed upon himself, while also searching for a way to stay alive should he succeed.
