Bike theft: organized or opportunistic?

My Muli cargo bike got stolen from my building’s yard about 2 weeks ago in the middle of the night. The frame was locked with a thick ABUS chain lock, the rear wheel was locked, and it was under a motorcycle cover.

The AirTag pinged 400 metres away the next day. At the sight we found the car seat that was in the cargo basket, the frame bag, and some other accessories ditched in an alley. We didn’t find the AirTag and it has not pinged since.

My neighbour’s ring camera shows the bike there at 3am then gone at 4am but nothing else useful.

My question is - is this the work of a seasoned bike theft/organized crime situation or is it under a tarp in an encampment somewhere? I just don’t know where I should be focusing my energy in searching for it. We’ve been going to encampments, talking to people and putting up posters offering a reward, and we’ve also been checking Marketplace/Craigslist etc.

I’m in Montreal for context. Any input helps! It’s a high value bike in a unique colour.

AirTag hasn’t pinged in over 36 hours… I thought it stopped showing the location after 24 hours? Anyone know what’s going on here?

Our family's cargo bike was stolen last night (April 27) around 3am in Parc/Laurier area of Mile end.

It's a Muli motor st special edition #1. It's the only one in Canada of this colour as far as we know.

It was locked to our fence with an ABUS maximum security chain. The rear wheel was also locked and it was beneath a motorcycle cover. Overall the value is over $10,000 - but more importantly it's our family's main form of transportation as we don't own a car, and the money was raised by family and friends. It's very much a community bike.

We are filing a police report. Please share and keep an eye out Montreal!
