What’s more beneficial early on, speed or distance?

I just ran my first 5k (40:45, average pace 13:07). As I start to think about the next few months or training, i’m curious… is it better to focus on building speed and getting my average pace down for 5ks, or focus on increasing the length of my runs? Or is it personal preference?
