I had a lovely conversation recently with Frédéric Lourdin, the CPO of PHC Holdings Corporation.

His view was simple: if you ignore cultural differences in procurement, eventually things start breaking down. Sometimes with suppliers, sometimes internally, usually both.

He's worked across Swiss and Japanese business cultures for years, and seen first-hand how differently trust, communication and decision-making work in those very different cultures. We often talk about global processes and standardisation, but the human side of working across cultures matters just as much.

ps when I first started in Procurement 20+ years ago, I completely messed up a negotiation in South Korea becuase I did not do my homework on the culture and formalities of doing business there.
