I had a tea today with a lady from yoga, it was the first time we met socially to chat. She is a liberal politically, in a liberal city (Greens dominate with Labour second).
She knows I'm trans as I don't hide it, I've known her at yoga for probably 2 years.
I talked a bit about my fears given the current climate and spoke of maybe moving to Germany as a result.
She was clueless.
She knew nothing about anything that concerns trans people today. Not one one thing. I felt quite offended, and a bit upset. This stuff threatens us every day, and yet here was an apparently liberal minded woman who could be an ally who was not. Not because she was transphobic, but because she wasn't paying attention.
It isn't the first time, I know nice lady who is very supportive, but who reads the Telegraph, and skips over the transphobic stories. She deflected when I pointed this out.
I am not sure what to make of it all, but it did make me wonder about it, which is why I'm sharing.
