The photo shows the only one left I can find

I bought 5 kuhli loaches and put them in my tank. 1 week later, I would only ever see 2. I am fairy positive it was the same 2 by the markings on their body. Another 2 weeks go by and there's only 1 left. I know they don't like it, but I've taken apart my entire tank. Took out all the driftwood and rocks. They usually immediately scurry out when I lift the rocks up. Nothing. No movement at all. I have absolutely no idea where they are, and I don't even know if they're dead because I wouldn't be able to find their remains. Is this normal behavior? Are they still alive? Where could they possibly be?
