My laptop is suddenly dying, the screen is literally breaking apart out of nowhere, so I need to replace it pretty soon.

I mainly need it for work, and watching films/shows but I also play visual novels (pretty much no other games). I always read that “any recent laptop can run VNs,” but that hasn’t really been my experience.

My current laptop is an ASUS VivoBook S15 S512DA-EJ315T from 2020 with 8GB RAM, an AMD Ryzen 7 3700U, and Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics.

It was usually fine for lighter stuff, but longer VNs could lag hard, freeze, or even crash. For example, Fate/stay night gave me issues, and recently a 50-hour VN started crashing pretty often.

So for a new laptop, what specs should I actually pay attention to? Is 16GB RAM the main thing, or should I care more about the processor, SSD, or even cooling/build quality?
