Warning to others
Hi all!
My B8.5 A4 (1.8TFSI EA888.3 CJEB) started rattling like the timing chain was about to give in. I disassembled the timing covers and spun the engine and saw that intake cam didnt move with the timing if that makes sense. Like the VVT part moved but the shaft itself didnt.
Took it apart and swapped a new cam in without much thinking. I am swapping lots of parts as the cars been driven for very long now and i dont wabt any surprises.
Well, last night i wanted to see what exactly failed and took apart the VVT to see lots of deep scratches and marks of foreign material being hammered against walls. I also took apart the spool valves in the end of the cam and there is a little spring plate thingy inside. Well that this was missing little bits which ive found in my oil filter now. Luckily my engine seems to be alright as so little metal got loose.
Last year I swapped the magnetic solenoids when they threw a fault code at me. Should have swapped these as well as they cost only a little. I just didnt expect they would fail like that.
If youve experienced this or similar, feel free to point out thing i would need to look into. Camshaft bearing surfaces seem ok, havent checked turbo oil lines yet but no play on the shaft.
Long story short, swap the spool valves as well when doing the magnets guys!
