Is it okay to ask about understudying?
I was recently cast in a show in the ensemble. There was a whole kerfuffle with communication, and I originally was told I wasn’t cast, and then a week later got a call telling me there was a mistake. I learned from that call that I’m in the ensemble. They have since posted the cast announcement, and they use google classroom for all communication, so I can see all the current casting info, some of which is more detailed than what I’d seen previously.
However, I haven’t seen anything about understudies for any role. I’m super curious if there are any and who they are, and/or if I could potentially be one and not know because I never got the “official” email?
I feel like it would be weird for me to ask the director about it, especially since I haven’t worked with this company before, and I don’t want to seem like I’m begging for a bigger part? I do kinda feel like I have the smallest ensemble part out of everyone, which means they wouldn’t necessarily need to replace me if I were to fill in for a lead? I am hopeful for things I want until I have clear evidence it’s not going to happen, so idk if I should just wait to hear an announcement of some sort, or if it would be ok to ask?
