I might have the opportunity to find myself in Milan and/or Turin for a very brief time - either about 24 hours, or maybe 48, arriving from MXP in the early afternoon (13:20 arrival) and departing from MXP in the early afternoon (15:20 departure). This would be a Saturday arrival and a Sunday or Monday departure. It may be this weekend (1-3 May).
I have never been to Italy but will save Seeing Italy for another time. I can easily entertain myself for the time I'm there at the Centro Storico Fiat and/or Museo Alfa Romeo, and the cathedral or etc. I could stay in Milan or take the train to Turin and spend the night there, or both if I stay the extra day.
1)In either city, I'm interested in staying somewhere cheap, but decent. It's only a night or two, so I do not need a lot. Basically the cheapest decent place I can find. What should I expect to pay? 100 Euro, more, less? Where should I look (i want to be convenient to the rail stations)? Any specific suggestions are welcome. I'm not really a hostel person but I'd consider it for this. I often use AirBnB but try to avoid it in cities where doing so makes you That Guy. I don't know if these are such places.
2)I specifically want to get some San Simone amaro to take home with me. How widely is it sold? Can I get it at e.g. a good supermarket, a 24-hour supermarket, etc. or do I need to go to a liquor or amari store? Is it easily available in Milan, or do I need to go to Turin?
3)How much faith can I place in train schedules? I won't have a lot of time so I'd like to have a realistic idea of how long it will take me to get from MXP to Milan, and from Milan to Turin.
4)What is getting in and out of MXP like? How early should I arrive for departure? What should I expect for passport control in/out? I am a US citizen and will be carrying only hand luggage.
thanks!
