Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice or similar experiences regarding my parents 8-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog.
Background
Early March: he got through a fence and likely got injured by another dog
Injuries were not immediately visible due to his thick coat
Initially only a small chin wound was noticed (treated with Betadine)
Progression
Over the following weeks, multiple wounds appeared and progressively worsened.
Treatments so far
Multiple antibiotics (Synulox, Semelcef, currently Tsefalen – 28-day course)
Topical treatments (Chlorexyderm gel, wound creams, foam, powders)
Antifungal vaccine
Supplements and supportive care
Recently started Sporimune (cyclosporine) due to suspected allergic/immune-related cause
Current condition
Multiple severe, non-healing wounds (see photos)
Previously high fever (40.6°C / 105.1°F)
Significant weight loss (~3 kg)
Overall condition worsening despite treatment
Home care
Daily wound cleaning
Betadine applied after cleaning
Wearing a shirt to prevent licking and contamination
Next step
Biopsy/sample collection scheduled for Monday
Results expected in ~1 week
Main question(s):
Has anyone seen something similar?
We are especially wondering about:
Deep bacterial infection vs. resistant strain
Fungal infection (despite vaccination)
Autoimmune skin disease
Possible misdiagnosis or missing diagnostics
TL;DR
8 y/o Bernese with worsening, non-healing wounds after dog-related injury. Multiple antibiotics not working, had high fever, losing weight. Now on cyclosporine. Biopsy scheduled. Looking for possible causes or advice.
I cant post pictures, but I can send them to anyone. 2 vets already saw him, but the said they never seen amything like this before, and I am running out of ideas.
