I found out I was overwatering recently and have adjusting my watering schedule already. Are these first fruits a result of the overwatering or something else?

Is this a case of over or under watering?
I have 2” layer of pine shavings as mulch in a raised garden bed. I live in Southern California, so it’s been 80+ weather for a while now.
I would water the tomatoes every day as the weather started to warm up, so I thought it could be over watering. I checked the top 1-2 inches of soil, and it seemed a bit on the drier side, but it would still have some moisture as it got deeper (not water logged though). I thought I could be overwatering so stretched out the watering to every other day, but the curling seemed to get worse.
the curling originally was only on 3 of my 6 plants and only effected the bottom part of the plant. the top part of the plants looked fine. now all 6 plants have curling leaves.
was this just always a case of under watering? I’d rather not try and stress the plants anymore the necessary trying to sort this out. Im in the process of installing drip irrigation. any advice on how much I should be watering a week in GPH? im in zone 10.
