I think I just have a bad sense of humor or something, but I've never really found any stand up comedies really funny. The only stand up comedy sketch I've verbally laughed at was a Steve Martin bit. I don't HATE stand up comedy, I sometimes find it amusing, but I never really laugh while watching.
I've seen Burnham, Iglesias, Seinfeld, and Mulaney, and I enjoy listening to their stories or set ups, but I don't really verbally laugh.
I've seen Andrew Dice, and it just seemed like the whole thing was just, "I smashed my girlfriend in a car, eeeiya". I just don't get what is supposed to be funny about the character; I am aware it is supposed to be a Fonz parody, but I just don't get it myself. Good for him getting a girlfriend I guess.
I have sort of walked in on a Bill Burr special and I think Carlin at one point??? I wasn't really chuckling at that either. It sort of felt like I was being talked at, which is fine, but I just don't find that style very funny either.
I just don't get any modern stand up comedians that come across my social media pages either. A lot of them just say, "I'm Conservative" or "I'm Liberal" or "I'm Centrist" etc, and the crowd just eats it up. I just don't understand how stating your views is funny, even if I agree, I just don't think listing facts about yourself or what you believe in constitutes a joke.
HOWEVER, this could just be that I'm not refined enough to get it. I laugh at the dumbest possible things. I consistently laugh at 3rd rate comedy movies or movies with juvenile humor. I'm going to be real, I laugh at fart jokes like in Nacho Libre or Scooby Doo:Spooky Island. I laugh at dumb puns and stupid jokes all the time. Maybe I'm not "grown up" enough to get it despite my age. I think part of it is that I think I prefer physical slapstick humor like the Stooges and cartoons, so someone just standing around saying verbal jokes doesn't cut it for my lizard-humor brain. I think that would explain why I liked the Steve Martin show, because he uses props and tends to move around a bit more. I mean, I have laughed at verbal jokes before don't get me wrong, but I think a lot of verbal jokes I laugh at tend to be situational (comebacks, reactions, things that wouldn't make sense outside of the established situation).
I just don't know. This is the reason my family makes me sit at a kids table during Christmas, despite the fact there are no children in my family.
