Is it worth paying for a proper tool or is the photos app on Mac enough for most things? Still experimenting with photo editing and don't have a clear understanding of the theory behind it, but I mainly edit a photo until it looks the best to my eyes I guess. Also, how does one edit a specific part of a picture rather than the whole image? For example, if I want to reduce exposure on the top half of an image or want just one area to have a stronger red what would be the best approach? Thanks for the help!

First time posting so I hope I’m doing it right. I don’t get how I can adjust to make it that the subject has nice lighting and the brighter more sun lit areas aren’t overexposed and blowing out. Whenever I make the sun area less blown out it makes the buildings extremely dark. What does one do in this scenario to get the best of both?

Update: Wow thanks to everyone I wasn’t expecting all the help much appreciated! I’m quite new to photography, I’ve been doing it as a fun hobby but I thought I should start posting and getting more advice and well first post and already learnt two haha. The general consensus was to either expose the background then improve shadows or combining in post, also there’s the hdr option on some cameras which I don’t even think my camera can has.
