What equipment do I actually need to start teaching English online? (Beginner settup)

Hey everyone

I’m just getting started with online English teaching and I’m trying to keep things simple and budget-friendly at the beginning.

I’ve seen people say you don’t need much, but I’d like to know what’s actually necessary vs what’s just “nice to have.”

So far I’m thinking:

Laptop or PC (nothing fancy, just stable)

Decent internet connection

Headset with microphone

Webcam (or built-in)

Basic lighting (maybe a desk lamp or natural light)

Quiet background / clean space (for example a white background)

My goal is to start on platforms like Preply, Cambly, or NativeCamp etc... and I’m not trying to spend a lot of money upfront.

A few questions:

Is a headset really necessary or can I start with laptop audio?

How important is lighting for getting students?

Do I need a ring light or is that overkill?

What’s the minimum internet speed that works well?

Anything beginners usually forget?

Would really appreciate advice from people already teaching 🙏

Trying to build a realistic work-from-home income (need advice & experiences)

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to build a work-from-home income step by step, not chasing anything unrealistic, just consistent, small daily earnings that I can grow over time.

Right now, my plan is to combine multiple online income sources instead of relying on just one:

Microtasks / Gig work (Clickworker, SproutGigs, Appen-type platforms)

My Goal: make at least $5–$10/day in the beginning

Online English tutoring

I have a solid level of English, so I’m looking into platforms where I can teach conversational English (even if the pay starts low)

Freelance gigs (mostly design)

I do graphic design and want to start offering simple services (thumbnails, social media posts, etc.)

Call center / support jobs (remote)

Planning to apply once I improve my German and build more confidence, but I would really like to know is there any English support jobs.

Transcription / typing work

As an additional source when I have extra time

Long term, I don’t expect instant success.

My goal is:

Stack small income streams

Learn skills (English, German, design)

Eventually transition into more stable remote work

I’m not trying to get rich overnight, even $10–$15/day consistently at the start would be a big win for me.

My questions:

Which of these is the most realistic to scale first?

Are microtask platforms worth it long-term, or just for starting out?

Any tutoring platforms that actually pay beginners reliably?

What would YOU focus on first if starting from zero?

Appreciate any honest advice, especially from people who’ve actually gone through this path.

Thanks!🙏🏽

How to start online tutoring + which platforms support Payoneer?

Hey everyone,

I’m interested in starting as an online tutor and wanted to understand what’s actually required to get started + which platforms are worth it (especially for international tutors).

  1. What do you realistically need to become an online tutor?

From what I’ve researched so far, it seems like the basics are:

Strong knowledge in at least one subject (English, math, science, etc.)

Good communication skills (explaining things clearly is key)

Stable internet + decent microphone/webcam

Some kind of proof (degree, certificate, or even just experience)

Ability to structure lessons (not just “talking” but actually teaching)

Am I missing anything important? Do platforms require degrees or can you start without one?

  1. Platforms that accept Payoneer or bank transfer (important for me):

I’m specifically looking for platforms that support Payoneer payouts (since PayPal isn’t ideal in my country).

From what I found:

AmazingTalker (Payoneer supported)

Some AI/tutoring-related platforms might support it too

But I’m not sure which tutoring platforms are best in 2026 for international tutors.

Which platforms actually:

accept beginners

have real students (not dead accounts)

support Payoneer or similar payouts

Any real experiences would help a lot 🙏

Thanks!
