Is he channelling one of the ancient Dunedain who were killed during the war against Angmar?

Or maybe he is describing that when he, Pippin and Sam were captured the barrow-wight appeared as men of Carn Dum?

Or something else? I've always been a bit puzzled by this passage.

We are playing the Great Flanaess River Adventure and recently looted a barrow. In the coffer corpse's treasure were "10 +1 iron spikes". However, none of us can figure out what these are. +1 to what?
