I'm interested in teaching high school English and am currently in school for an English education degree. Generally speaking, will getting a traditional education degree that comes with a teaching license get you a job faster than getting a content degree and alternatively certifying? I'm almost thirty and will be starting a family soon, so I'd like to be settled into a teaching career as soon as possible.

I'm also in the National Guard which, while paying for school, often takes me away from school, so the longer I'm in college, the more likely I will have activations or deployments that will require me to take off a semester or two, further delaying starting my teaching career.

So, would it be better to get an English degree and then a teaching license after the fact or should I just get an English education degree that comes with the license? I'm also in Utah, if it matters.
