I'm curious if anyone can point me to a word processing / document creation application with versioning built into the file?

You can do basic change tracking in Word, but if you want versioning you have to save the file to OneDrive / SharePoint and use the versioning of the file store.

I'm looking for a tool where the version history is built into the file and all you need is a main desktop application to compare versions and see changes. Basically, a shareable version history for working with external entities without having to manage network access, app permissions, cloud accounts and licenses, etc. Something like a SharePoint or Confluence page, without having to have all the data stored in a cloud.

If anyone is aware of something like this, please share. Thank you!
