Hi! I was accepted into Thomas Jefferson and Drexel University (Elkins park). Thomas Jefferson tuition is 46k, but received a 5k scholarship. I would take out 20,500 in federal loans and the remaining 20k in PA state loans. Drexel tuition is 36k, 3k work study, and takeout 20,500 in federal loans. The remainder is 15k.
Currently live in an apartment with my partner, but if I went to Thomas Jefferson, we would move into my parents and I would commute 1 hour to campus every day. My parents are likely to charge us cheap rent (less than $1000). Gas prices are high, and I have an older car with issues so the commute is a huge con for me. I would also have to pay for parking and possibly Septa.
If I went to Elkins park, I would find a cheap apartment with my partner and split the cost, and commute less than 30 min to campus every day. Free parking on campus.
Personally, I prefer Drexel program and would hate to live with my parents again. I’m also terrified of my car breaking down, because it’s been having issues. But I know overall I would probably spend less at Thomas Jefferson if my car doesn’t break down. My parents would cook for us frequently and think rent overall would be cheaper.
Long term goal is to move to Australia with MRA agreement and use the FEIE to pay $0 federal loan payments until they’re forgiven. I’m most worried about the pa state loans. I would be going through the PA forward graduate loans.
What choice would you personally make?
