I am doing some hand quilting (learning how, really, on a *very* sparsely quilted gauze quilt I got second hand from family, which needed new batting) and found myself wishing for a tall thimble to go around my knuckle instead of the end of my finger, since this is where my hand naturally wants to push the needle. SO, I made one.
Scrap leather, linen thread, and beeswax. I approximately followed this tutorial. I don't have a proper leather hole punch, so we shall see how the awl-punched holes stand up - I tried to balance pulling the thread snug with not pulling so snug it risks tearing the leather.
It's a little snug (I forgot to take into account the thickness of the leather) but it is comfortable and should relax a bit with use. Test driving it this evening!
(Last photo is the quilt in question, plus an assistant checking for snuggliness.)
