From someone who works with dogs here every day — the stuff Google doesn’t tell you.

🏛️ The legal stuff (don’t skip this)

• Liability insurance: Spanish law now requires it for all dog owners. Tip: call your home insurance first — most policies already include it for free or very cheap.
• Microchip registration: If you moved from abroad, a local vet needs to register your foreign chip in the Catalan system (AIAC). Don’t skip this — it’s what identifies your dog legally here.
• Censo Municipal: Register your dog at your local Ajuntament. It’s free and takes 10 minutes.

🚇 Getting around — the honest version

• Metro: Officially dogs need a muzzle and short lead, and can’t travel during rush hours (8:00–9:30 and 17:00–19:00). Reality: most owners are responsible and guards are usually flexible if your dog is calm and well behaved. That said — always carry a muzzle in your bag for the strict days, and avoid peak hours anyway for your dog’s sake.
• Bus: Small dogs in a carrier only, no exceptions.
• Bigger dogs: Cabify and most taxis are generally fine if you ask beforehand. I also have trusted contacts for dog-friendly taxis if anyone needs them — with or without the owner travelling along.

🌿 Where to actually go

There are quite a few dog areas around Barcelona, but honestly many are small, poorly maintained, or right next to busy roads — not ideal. These are the ones actually worth visiting:
• Parc de l’Estació del Nord: The best dog park in the city. Big, social, great community of regulars.
• Parc de Joan Miró: Great atmosphere, central, good size.
• Glòries dog area: Brand new, so it’s spacious, clean and well maintained — one of the best in the city right now.
• Parc de la Ciutadella: The social hub. Not all areas are off-leash but it’s where everyone ends up on weekends. One heads-up: as with some busy urban parks, you may occasionally find drug paraphernalia on the ground — just worth keeping an eye out so your dog doesn’t get into anything.
• Montjuïc: Underrated. Huge green areas, fresh air, and you never leave the city. Perfect for a weekend morning. Same note as Ciutadella — keep an eye on the ground in quieter corners.

🏖️ The beach

• Summer (June–September): Dogs are only allowed at Platja de Llevant (fenced area, east end of Barcelona). Outside of that, beaches in the city are off limits in summer.
• Off season (October to Easter): Most beaches around Barcelona are relaxed about dogs — they can move freely. Just check local signs to be sure.

⚠️ Two things locals know that tourists don’t

• Processionary caterpillars: In spring — though depending on temperatures they can appear earlier or linger longer than expected. If you walk near pine trees, watch the ground. These caterpillars travel in lines and are highly toxic to dogs — skin contact alone can cause serious damage. If your dog touches one, go to the vet immediately, don’t wait.
• Leishmaniasis: Barcelona is a Mediterranean city, which means sandflies. They’re most active at dusk, especially near beaches or mountains. A good repellent collar (Seresto works well) during the warm months is more than enough — no need to panic, just prevent.

🏥 Vets — save these

It’s worth finding a regular vet you trust near your home before you need one urgently. But for emergencies, these two are reliable, well equipped, and comfortable in English:
• Balmes Vet — Carrer de Balmes, 205. Open 24h.
• Hospital Veterinari Glòries — Avinguda Diagonal, 237. Top emergency equipment.
• TomVets — vets that come to your home. Great option if your dog gets stressed at the clinic or you just can’t get out easily.

Hi everyone! I take care of dogs in my home in Eixample (right on Diagonal, near Gràcia and Passeig de Sant Joan).

I've been around dogs my whole life — volunteered at shelters, travelled to rescues abroad, and a few years ago turned it into my full-time thing. My life revolves around them, not the other way around.

I only take 2-3 dogs at a time. No cages, no rushing — just home, walks, games and a lot of attention. Each dog has their own routine. Dogs are also covered by insuranc during their stay, which not many places offer.

I work with a lot of international families here in Barcelona and I'm fully comfortable in English.

I offer both daycare and overnight boarding — happy to help with whatever you need!

Feel free to DM me or drop a comment and I'll send you more info 🐾 IG: heydogbcn
