Question on realized gain for shareholder contributing property
Why is the realized gain here 20,000 for Jones and Carey when the textbook formula has realized gain as FMV of stock received + liabilities assumed + FMV of boot received - NBV.
For Jones wouldn’t the realized gain be 120,000 + 60,000 + 10,000 - 100,000 = 90,000
For Carey wouldn’t it be 40,000 + 20,000 - 20,000 =40,000?
However in the answer and skill builder they simply did FMV - NBV = realized gain.
Am I just overthinking it?
