Live-in in California at a dog place
Hello, looking for some legal advice/help. My friend and myself live-in a running dog daycare facility that boards dogs at night and the first contract we had we wanted to push for getting at least minimum wage. I’ve been told my numerous people aka my boss stating that they do not have the zoning approvals to house here so they put a plaque that says office up so when they come to inspect they don’t suspect anything or anyone living here. All in all I am very greatful to be able to have a place to sleep and use the kitchen but I’m having trouble figuring out where this is illegal and how to talk with my boss and the person who speaks on behalf of the owner. We had a meeting yesterday and they basically wanna change the contract to where it’s “fair” but really it just protects the company and my boss wants to put it as the owner helps out with another country so that’s where the taxes are going. Though basically pottying the dogs takes about by ourselves 40 plus minutes and we only get paid $10 a day for both AM and PM for 20-35 dogs . As well as $15 for 35-46 and $50 for 47 and up. Though now they want to change it to $15 for 16-30 dogs but if we do it together we have to split that $15 which is $7.50. I’m usually not here during business hours due to the loud barking and the occasional client who uses the bathroom that’s connected to my room that I have my personal belongings in. That has to be unlocked during business hours. My roommate wants to file a wage claim and I’m on the fence about it because I’m not sure where or what that would do. The other facility that she owns had live-ins as well but one of them called the city due to rats and they came and kicked out the live-ins and they couldn’t board dogs for quite some time and I’m sure they got fined. I put some of the agreement in. Let me know what yall think we should do.
