Hey everyone, I could really use the opinion of people who know a lot about variegated Monsteras and older clones.
I got this plant today from the head of our tissue culture lab. Around 5 years ago, someone gave it to him and claimed it was a Monstera Thai Constellation (import from Asia) The original idea was apparently to sterilize it and propagate it in vitro, but that never ended up happening.
Instead, the plant basically sat forgotten in the lab for years, was rarely watered, barely cared for, and mostly just survived instead of actually growing.
Now I’m wondering if this is really a Thai Constellation, or maybe some other variegated Monstera clone, possibly even an Albo.
The variegation looks partly speckled/marbled, which made me think of Thai Constellation, but there are also some larger white sectors, so I’m honestly not sure.
I’d really appreciate opinions on:
- Thai Constellation or Albo?
- Does it look like an older Thai clone to you?
- Or does this look like something completely different?
I’m also unsure how I should proceed with rehab and repotting.
Since the plant spent years neglected in old substrate, my current idea was:
- not to go fully bare root,
- leave part of the old substrate attached to the roots,
- carefully remove dead or mushy material,
- and move it into a more airy mix.
I currently have zeolite, sphagnum moss, expanded clay/pumice/volcanic rock, and regular potting soil available.
My thought was to make a chunky but still slightly moisture-retentive mix, while avoiding washing all the roots completely clean to reduce stress.
Or would you completely remove everything and fully restart the plant?
I’d really appreciate any opinions, both about identification and how you would personally rehab a plant like this. I don’t want to stress it even more after finally rescuing it 😅
