Instagram's direct messages are since yesterday, 08.05.2026, no longer end-to-end encrypted.
This means for you, that every text and image you send to your family and friends are no longer for their eyes only. Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Messenger and WhatsApp (...), can now access every conversation, see every single "privately sent" image and video, that you share through their dm's on Instagram.
End-to-end encryption is like a seal on a letter, going from one person to the other - savely. Nobody else should read about your private matters. Nobody else should see images of yourself, your friends, family and children, which you choose to only share with one (or more) particular person.
Now unfortunately this is no longer the case for their dm's.
The reason for this major change was made "due to low user adoption of the feature".
We at BRBack believe in privacy and are for end-to-end encryption! This should be the norm...
