I currently work for local government as a full stack developer. Whenever we work on code projects, it’s usually C#, front and back, integrating vanilla JS to the front end and MSSQL for the database. Personally, I would use React for the front end but it hasn’t been necessary.

However, it’s local government. We fix problems. So sometimes it’s low code or no code. We rely on Sharepoint for a lot of solutions, using power platform if we need to, or use things like Nintex forms.

I would still classify myself as junior in terms of coding experience, maybe junior+ depending on the definition of mid level.

Being that it’s local government, I currently make 72k fully remote and fantastic benefits. The upper end of my pay grade is 92k. There is one senior role, that isn’t currently being offered, that the pay range is 94k-112k. Given enough time, I could reach for that but that are two people on my team that have been here longer and would likely fulfill the role if they wanted it.

I’ve been here two years and I told myself I would evaluate things at that point.

I’m worried about getting stuck and never fulfilling my potential in this field. Just the fact that I could be earning six figures, even if on the low end, with my “experience” always gets me. But I’m aware of the current environment. It scares me to find something new, get laid off, and put my family at risk.

What would you do?
