I was in a car accident a few months ago and was injured. It was not life threatening but I did have to have hand surgery and take a month off of work. I was not at fault in the accident. The driver at fault’s insurance issued me a bodily injury claim settlement that was the max on their policy. The majority of that amount went to the surgery & recover cost. I have an “underinsured motorist” policy with my car insurance. I just found out today that they are issuing me the max amount on my policy. My question is, do I have to pay taxes on this amount or the amount I received from the other insurance? I am located in California. I work for a private family and they kindly continued to pay me during my recovery so I did not receive any disability or workers comp payments. I am seeing conflicting advice online about whether or not I do have to pay taxes. Can anyone offer me any advice?
