Akira has blown me away, again.
I'm a bit of a fan of Akira. Thanks to my brother taping it on BBC in the 90's I was introduced to this bizarre, neon cyberpunk world that I would never understand but be endlessly fascinated by.
I've bought and watched it on every format it's been released on, own the soundtrack on vinyl and CD, have all the books, I even own the official Jacket that was made for one of its anniversaries.
I watched it in iMAX a few years back which was awesome, and bought the 4K around the same time but they had fluffed the initial release and didn't encode the HDR or something so I was sent a replacement disc.
Last weekend I threw it on as I hadn't rewatched it in a good while and had never tried the reprinted disc...
This film absolutely sings in 4K. The sights and sounds of Neo-Tokyo were the most immersive they have ever been on my LG OLED, and the 3D surround headphones I use gave me one of the best audio mixes in recent memory.
The fact this film is nearly 40 years old and can still look brand new is baffling, but comforting. It genuinely felt like watching it for the first time again, but experiencing it as well.
Do any of you have films that have been Mainstays in your life that have evolved thanks to 4K?
