Hi everyone,
I’m a frontend-focused developer from Latvia exploring realistic paths to work in the U.S. with visa sponsorship. I am studying computer science at a university in English.
About me:
Location: Riga, Latvia (EU citizen)
Experience: Junior / early-mid level
Tech stack: React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript
Backend: Node.js (Express), currently also working with Java (Spring Boot)
Other: Redux, Supabase, REST APIs, Jest, Cypress
Projects: Built several full-stack and frontend apps (task manager with auth, search/filter systems, etc.)
English: B2
Current situation: I’m actively building projects and currently developing a full-stack HR management system (Spring Boot + Next.js). I’m aiming to grow into a strong full-stack engineer.
Goal: Work for a U.S.-based company, ideally with visa sponsorship (e.g. H-1B), or find a realistic path that could eventually lead there.
Main questions:
How realistic is H-1B sponsorship for someone at my level (junior / early-mid, no U.S. degree)?
Would it be significantly more realistic to:
first gain 3–5 years of experience, or
join an international company in Europe and transfer internally later?
Are there companies that sponsor junior developers at all, or is sponsorship mostly limited to senior/specialized roles?
Does applying directly from abroad even make sense, or is it mostly a dead end?
Would working remotely for a U.S. company first improve chances of relocation later?
Any honest insights or personal experiences would be really helpful. I’m trying to understand what path is actually viable, not just theoretically possible.
