My parents are buying a house with a basement “suite” that has a kitchen and bath. The construction looks shoddy and there is no permit. The current owners said everything was in this state when they moved in over 10 years ago. They have no idea if there is a permit, or if it’s a legal dwelling, etc.
My parents have no plans to live or rent out the basement. They want to renovate it completely after they move in, but are not in a hurry.
Are there any risks or caveats we should be aware of if we aren’t renting it out? Is this something they should flag to their insurance company? They are in Ontario. TYIA
