Inquiry witness claims CFMEU planted asbestos to get project shut down

Excerpts from the article:

Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) members have been accused of placing a piece of asbestos on a Cairns Regional Council project in an effort to get works shut down by the health and safety regulator.

The allegations were made during day two of the ninth round of hearings of Queensland's Commission of Inquiry into the union in Cairns.

Mr Dalamaras said it had been raining in the days leading up to the site visit when the 50-cent-sized pieces of "small, bonded asbestos" were discovered.

"One particular piece we were shown was very odd as it was white. It didn't look like it had come out of the dirt," he said.

He said the piece was not wet despite the rain.
"It was sitting above the track in the dirt. We found that quite off," he said.

During the incident, Mr Dalamaras's colleague, Inspector Rob Duckworth, was allegedly called a "f***ing dog" repeatedly by local CFMEU delegate Roly Cummins.

Soon afterwards, Mr Dalamaras became aware that the CFMEU were making posts about him and Mr Duckworth on social media sites, calling them useless and attacking their credibility.

Netball body suspends woman charged over alleged antisemitic slur at game

Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin, who attended the scene after the incident, said the woman allegedly told parents and players associated with the opposing club, "F*** the Jews", adding that Jewish people "should have been eradicated".

"A man walked past and heard her and asked her what she said and she repeated the phrase," Mr Ryvchin claimed.

Mr Ryvchin said other parents associated with the Saints club came forward to defend the woman after she was confronted.

"One man was recorded saying that 'There's a reason why this happens to you people every weekend', and 'You're always playing the victim'," he said.

The individual alleged to have made the comments has been provisionally suspended from attending or participating in any netball activities or attending netball locations while the matter is investigated," he said in a statement.

"We will continue to engage with the local netball and Jewish communities and work together to send a message that netball is safe and inclusive for all."
