Am I overthinking this!?
Hello. I am in my late 20s only about 7 years in my professional career in accounting. I moved across the country for a “dream job” it was just a cool company…great benefits but terrible pay. I was able to move into a more niche accounting role and wanted to make more money after being in the role for 2 years. The company started to have some issues made layoffs and people were leaving. My co worker that was making 10k more than me left. I had a recruiter reach out for a roll making 30% more. I got the job offer and tried to use to get a little more since I wanted to stay. When I came in to ask for more they just said no and explained to me that they can’t give me anything because of basically performance (it was said in a different way that sounded like they were pulling it out of thin air) which I had no idea was an issue I was told in every review I am doing a great job. After I left they gave some others in the department raises but also made more layoffs. Which kinda just made me mad tbh. I started at the new company and the guy training me decided to retire after month or so. I was thrown into the fire which was fine. But few weeks later they are like surprise we hired a manager that you will report to no longer the controller. Now I report to a middle manager which took over some things I was going to do and the guy that retired. My problem is my new manager has no clue what my role does or how it works…he even mentioned to me that my knowledge and experience is more than his. He is great guy and is trying to learn the role but he just misses the mark on my expectations of a manager. I wanted the role because I will be reporting to someone with tons of experience now I have this middle manager that is to scared to ask questions and is worried people will realize he doesn’t know something…his words!! The controller explained to me this doesn’t affect my growth opportunities but I don’t see how it doesn’t?
Idk if I am just ranting or what advice I actually need. I just don’t know how to handle this change of reporting to someone that has no clue when my last job one of the reasons I considered leaving was because my boss didn’t know what I did and I wasn’t growing I was teaching. Some friends have recommended I say something to the controller that I think this guy doesn’t know what he is doing. But I feel like that’s a bit much. but also I do alot less at the new role and make 30% more so maybe I just be happy and try to get the most out of it before I try to find something else. Maybe some ways I can ask for more impactful work or projects so I can use that to look better than my boss and possibly ask for more money?
