Company asking me to pay $600 for laptop repairs on a device I have had for less than a year

Hi all!

I don’t know much about laptops, but almost a year ago my old laptop died so I bought a new one. It’s a HP and it broke recently and despite the fact I have had it for less than a year, the store I bought it from will not replace it and has sent me a $600 repair fee to fix it. The stated this issue was a broken hinge due to user error, but I don’t believe I have done anything to cause this issue. I thought it would be under warranty, I am very stressed out about this because I am in the middle of exam/assessment season at uni and I can’t afford to fix it. I have had to borrow a really janky computer for the rest of the semester because its going to take a while to fix. The cost to fix it is almost as much as the cost of the laptop itself. What are my options right now?

*Edit: the issue was with my screen which is why I took it in but they specified the cost of fixing the laptop was because of user error due to the hinge breaking which is why they won't replace it.

I am very stressed thinking about what to do in this situation, so any advice would help. I switched over from a visual arts degree to a bachelor of arts majoring in Archaeology/Art History. I am very interested in history so all of my courses except one are history based. The thing is, I really hate my Archaeology course.

I have no idea why, I am such a history centric person who loves learning about artifacts, but learning the course content makes me want to gouge my eyes out. The thing is, I have no idea if its because I have no interest in the course or if the content thus far has been very boring. I wasn't expecting to doing Indiana Jones' activities or anything like that, but holy fuck. My class last week, we had a lady come in and talk about shells for an hour.

I have already seen multiple people drop out of this course for being boring/too hard, but I have no idea if it gets better or if this is what it is like the whole way through. A lot of archaeologists in Australia also end up working in cultural heritage (asking mining companies to not blow things up before they do anyway) which I have no interest in.

I guess what worries me is that if I switch my major I will end up hating it as well and my course will be wayyy longer than it needs to be. I have only completed 6 units out of 16, and I am dreading making a choice of whether to stay with this major longer and see if it gets better or switch and make my life harder lol.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Any advice would be great.
