Today I approached a 4 way stop that already had people waiting on all sides. When I got to the front there was a car on the right turning right (so in front of me) and cars across from me with the front car turning left. I started driving as the car on the right finished turning to keep traffic moving and assumed the car across from me would pull forward and turn behind me like at a normal intersection. Instead they tried turning directly from the stop since there were no cars on the right and they could cut across the lane I guess. But I was already in the intersection at that point so they had to stop and they had some choice words for me as we passed.
Was I wrong to assume I had the right of way since I was going straight? I generally just go when it’s my turn at 4 way stops because so many people dither and hesitate which slows everyone down and I’m pretty sure it was my turn.
Edit: I feel like people are missing the part where there was a line so no one arrived first and the person to the right rule doesn’t apply because we were all there at the same time. Opposing traffic was taking turns and when it was my turn I was going straight and the person across was turning left. I would assume in that case the person going straight would have the right of way.
